The Apprentice (continued)

After finishing watching the first season of "The Apprentice", I go on watching the other seasons. I love the show!

I think I can learn a lot from that.

As a student majoring Global Marketing Communication & Advertising (GMCA), the show is fantastic!

Except the benefits shared before, another important one is to learn about the companies. Most of the task-related companies in the show are world famous. Before coming to US and before majoring in marketing communications, I kind of knew some brands and companies, although not enough. But only knowing about them, sometimes only the brand or company name is far from enough. You should learn more about how it works. Watching the show and putting yourself into a context is a wonderful way. You can always gain some unexpected experience.

The night before last, I watched an episode in Season 3. It's about Nestle. I know the brand long ago, and my favorite coffee is Nescafe instant coffee. But in China the brand has it own Chinese name. For the English name, I took it for granted, as "nestle" is an English word. But after watching that episode I found myself wrong. The pronunciation of the brand is not the same as that of the English word! Also my pronunciation for "Nescafe" was wrong. I felt ashamed of myself! It also reminded me when my classmates asked me about my life in China (many of them are interested in China as China is developing super fast) and about coffee, I mentioned Nestle and Nescafe, but they were confused. I was wondering then "they didn't know the famous brand?" Now I know where the problem is. So I will go on watch "The Apprentice" and squeeze some time to watch other related programs to benefit more.

Another point is that one communications planning text book mentioned "The Apprentice", praising its success in product placement. Actually what "The Apprentice" did is more advanced than only product placement. It set the episodes in the background of the companies. Therefore, some companies negotiate with Donald Trump to become a background/context company of the show, mainly to further publicize the company and build the brand. So, the show is not only the show. It includes many other things implicitly. It's much more broad than we normally think.

Also I want to say about Carolyn. She was the eye and ear of Donald, responsible for monitoring and reporting how the teams did the projects. She was tough. But she is really a business professional. I admire her. In one episode, a candidate wanted to quit as she was too tired and could not stand the fast-pace and pressure. Then Carolyn came and consoled the candidate. For Carolyn, she really knew well what she should do for the best of the Trump Corporation, and she responded fast, and she was good at communication and consoling. Then she was not tough. She was not the monitor and watcher but a friend. We can also tell from other episodes that she can sense whether the direction was correct (for example, for an 30-second ad) from the beginning. The ads are designed for customers. I am a customer. But I cannot tell whether it's good or not, whether it's impressive or not, whether it's effective or not. So I still have a long way to go. But for Carolyn, she possesses many aspects required for a business-woman. I should say, she's successful.

The Apprentice

The Apprentice

Just finished watching the first season of The Apprentice.

En, it's a nice show.

I watched a little of the last season of that when I was about to finish undergraduate study. And that time the show was strong recommended.

This time, again, the show was highly recommended. So I started to watch from the very beginning the night coming back from NYC.

Here in the show I can recognize many buildings that I'm familiar with -- kind of proud of myself~ And I've also been to the Trump Tower Wink

But what I benefit most are leadership, competition vs. cooperation, and maybe American dream.

When I become a leader in the future, I will try to grasp the opportunities to express myself. I should be confident to express my own ideas and to lead the others, not to follow others and listen to others' opinions all the time. For me, this is the most beneficial point that I've learned. As out of my character, I do not want to confront others directly, even when the other side is wrong. This is not the best way though. So, I should learn to say "no" to others.

Another point that I think beneficial is how to tackle the relationship with team-members. To beat the other team, they need cooperation. But at the same time, members in the same team have to compete each other to get the final opportunity. Therefore, the relationship becomes really subtle and complex, like Amy and Nick. Especially in the last episode, Katrina said that the relationship became smooth as they did not compete any more and they worked for the same goal. In fact, just watching the show, I cannot experience the tensity of competition, although somebody get fired each week. I'm still like an outsider. And each time I guess who would get fired, and I'm right most of the time. But I just think, the real competition is never easy, and I should learn how to tackle the relationships.

A third point is probably the American Dream. I've learned about that in undergraduate study for long. And I'm kind of longing for that. You start all by yourself, and you'll succeed in the future. I like the spirit in the American Dream. And one reason why I come here is probably to realize my American Dream. In the show, it also relates the American Dream several times. And Donald Trump advocates the dream specifically, I think. The American Dream is good, but I think what have shown in the series are too luxury and material. But what that really means, who knows?

Global Marketing Communications & Advertising

Global Marketing Communications & Advertising
I study in Emerson College, majoring in Global Marketing Communications & Advertising. This is a one-year master program.

The program provides much insight in global issues. The course contents and assignments all focus on “global” practices of companies.

In my class, there are 36 students in total. Half of us are international students, from more than 10 countries: China, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, India, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Spain, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Canada. The American classmates are from different states.

Most of the time, all the students have the classes together. In total, we have 10 courses. In the past fall semester, we finished four courses: GM601 Marketing Management in a Global Environment, GM603 Cultural Foundations of Buyer and Organizational Behavior, GM604 Research Methods for Global Marketing, GM620 Global Brand Management. In the current spring semester, we also have four courses: GM605 Financial and strategic context global marketing, GM606 Global Marketing Communications Planning, GM636 Creative thinking and problem solving, and a selected course chosen from GM612 Global Public Relations, GM614 Global Advertising, and CC640 Web-based Communications Strategies. For the coming summer semester, we’ll have GM668 Global Marketing Capstone, and GM6
90 Global Marketing Intern.

For GM690 course, we can intern in any company or organization all over the world, international students under CPT. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to put what we’ve learnt into practice and prepare for future job. All of us will look for internship positions according to our interests and abilities under the supervision of professors and under the help of Career Services staff.

The professors of our GMCA program are nice and qualified, Thomas Vogel, William Anderson, Cathy Waters, Katie Youn… We not only enjoy learning knowledge in class, but also are happy to communicate with the professors after class.

Although the program is quite intense, and we always have tons of assignments to finish, it does not mean that our life is not colorful. As we all have classes together, about 4 hours each day, we form really close relationships between each other. We like to hang out after class. And so far, we have several birthday parties, holiday parties, and others. I believe everybody enjoys the happy time together with other GMCAers.
